Me at Oppi Koppi 2012 |
Oppi Koppi - THE music festival held annually in North West Province (Northam Farm), usually beginning around early August. I have only attended two of these festivals, in 2011 and 2012 and I would attend every year of my existence if I could!

Hundreds of people lining up at the main stage to watch a performance |
Oppi Koppi brings all sorts to the table. The funky, the weird, the hippies, the 'I need to shower twice a day' people and so on... There are of course ablutions and necessary means for hygiene, but this four day- three night festival is not for the squeamish or OCD! DUST DUST and more DUST is the most popular form of food, or rather what everyone seems to consume due to the nature of the farm floor. Staying true to its Afrikaans name, it is indeed held on a 'koppi', one main stage and several other stages divided by various stalls to ensure all concert goers music choices are met. Both local and international bands are set to play each year at this event. Anything from Zebra and Giraffe, Toya De Lazy, Fokofpolisiekar to Seether, The Kongos, Bullet for my Valentine and The Used!
The price of tickets in comparison to the value for money you get if you divide it by how many bands you get to see, is phenomenally cheap. Literally a couple of hundred acts are scheduled for the 3,5 days of the festival which when calculated equals about less than R5 per band!!!

Oppi Koppi Unknown brother 2011 |
I personally am not a hard rocker, head banger, groupie or music fundi by any stretch of the word, however I manage to enjoy myself immensely as the bands, atmosphere and people make the experience a truly unforgettable one. It has been ranked fourth in the UK Daily Mirror’s list of the Top Ten Music Festivals taking place outside mainland Britain. The great thing about the festival is that it encompasses a great multitude of music styles and each year brings a new theme or name to the Festival. 2012 was named Oppi Koppi Sweet Thing and festival goers go all out to live up to the name of the fest by wearing unusual outfits, making banners and setting up camp in a personalized manner. If its unique you are looking for, you can't beat good old Oppi Koppi!
